Quilt from Grandma Walle

Chiara and I were surprised when we went to the mailbox last week and found a large box addressed to Chiara. It wasn’t her birthday, or Christmas. I hadn’t ordered anything. I was puzzled, but Chiara was estatic. Not only did she get mail, which is cause for celebration, but she received a huge box.

We were barely in the door before she wanted me to help her open it. I was hesitant, not knowing what this could be from Riverside, CA, but there wasn’t going to be any convincing Chiara to wait. So we cut the tape and Chiara opened the lid to find a beautiful quilt! She immediately held it to her chin, then pulled it out and laid it on the kitchen floor to test it out. Thrilled with it, she ran upstairs (well, as fast as she could carrying the quilt) and asked me to help her remove the quilt on her bed. Then she put the new quilt from Grandma Walle in place. She couldn’t wait to take a nap with her new quilt! (This from a girl who fights her nap every day.)

Chiara has been showered with quilts from the very talented Bahrman ladies. Even before she was born, Aunt Fern made her a beautiful quilt. Her Grandma made her a Little Red Riding Hood quilt when she was a tiny baby. And Becca made her the 5 Little Monkeys quilt the summer she worked at A Common Thread.

Grandma Walle had mentioned making a quilt for Chiara, but her eyes had been bothering her. When we were down in May, she mentioned her eyes were much better thanks to cataract surgery and she was going to continue the quilt for Chiara. While many women who are 93 years old would have given up the sewing many years–or decades–earlier, it is not surprising that Grandma Walle is still making beautiful quilts. It must be in the family heritage!

What a beautiful quilt! I hope it helps Chiara with nap time more than once. Just by looking at the picture… it makes me want to take a nap. If you ever get too many quilts, let me know… the 5 little monkeys sounds especially fun! ;)

How precious! And how lucky for Chiara that the Bahrman women are quilters! That’s not a talent held by the Buck women! (With the exception of Patty who made a quilt for Amy with Flavia squares she purchased while on her honeymoon!)

Grandma Walle fretted over this quilt frustrated with her vision and other concerns. She was so pleased when she was able to go back to work on it and so looked forward to sending it to her. I am sure she had a big grin on her face when she heard how thrilled Chiara was with her new quilt. Lots of love was shipped with that quilt.
